News from Executive Director Kate Paine

photo_11400894_253571.jpgDear WBON Members and Friends,

I've just reached the two-month mark in my new role as executive director of WBON. It's been very exciting and full of travel as I drove around the state to attend regional chapter meetings. It amazes and inspires me to meet so many women with such energy and entrepreneurial spirit who are doing great things with their respective businesses. The power of WBON is especially effective in a state/region like ours. Business women meeting with other business women and connecting and finding ways to help one another just seems to "happen" naturally here. Add that dynamic to the power of social media and it's a recipe for success.

I want to thank our former executive director, Robin Gronlund, who spent a good part of her summer bringing me up to speed on the day-to-day duties of running WBON. We should all thank and appreciate the vast amount of energy and creativity she put into the organization and made it what it has become today. We are 350 members strong and much of that is due in large part to Robin's leadership. I thank her personally for being patient with me as I came up to speed. I also want to thank our part-time administrative assistant, Beth Robinson. Many of you have not had the good fortune to meet her but she plays a major behind-the-scenes role at WBON and keeps all of our "virtual" WBON world alive and running smoothly.

Our most exciting bit of news this summer was that our Board Vice President, Stacey Dumas, and other Board members were able to get a group health insurance offering for all members of WBON. After a year of organizing this benefit, it finally took effect August 1st and has been met with a very favorable response. Stacey has been making the rounds to each of the chapters to discuss the offering as well as informing members about the health care reform bill in general.

Save the date for our upcoming WBON fall conference at the Stoweflake Resort and Spa on November 10 & 11th. The topic focuses on "saleswomanship" and how we, as women business owners, can price ourselves competitively, confidently AND within the Vermont marketplace. We are honored and privileged to have Mary Powell, CEO of Green Mountain Power, as our keynote speaker at dinner on the evening of November 10th. Watch the WBON website for the detailed agenda in the coming weeks. Other features will include interactive panel discussions around women in business in and around our state.

I thank each of you who have reached out to welcome me in my new role and I look forward to attending more chapter meetings and seeing many of you at the fall conference.

Warmly,
Kate Paine

Terri Crowther - Business Services Consultant, VSECU

Our Central Vermont Chapter Coordinator

For 16 years, I was a small business owner in the Central Vermont area, and sometimes I felt isolated from my peer group of other business owners. I often wondered how other businesses were marketing themselves... and how did they manage their banking, accounting and other financial matters? Many times I wished that there would be a place for me to interact with fellow small business owners who were asking the same questions and had the same concerns.

When I sold my business and started working for VSECU almost eight years ago, the Montpelier Chapter of WBON was just getting started. Although I missed the support that WBON could have provided me when I was a small business owner, I am so pleased to have found this organization where I can now be a resource for women business owners.

In my current position as a Business Services Consultant with VBiz, VSECU’s business services department for small businesses and nonprofits, I work with small and large businesses throughout Vermont. Because I have owned my own business, I am able to draw on a combination of my personal small business experiences as well as my financial services experiences to support business owners with their financial needs from deposit services to loans to merchant services.

Through the WBON network, we not only make our businesses stronger and more successful but we help mentor other women. As co-coordinator of the Central Vermont Chapter, I am happy to be a part of a community of talented and knowledgeable women who are so willing to share their experiences and support with one another.
